Our Sylvania Advantage Article
Kay & Paulus Orthodontics opens Sylvania office
Kay and Paulus Orthodontics recently expanded to Sylvania, opening an office at 5860 Alexis Rd. “We have many ties with Sylvania and have had dentists and patients ask repeatedly when we were going to open a Sylvania office. We also have patients from southeastern Michigan who find this location more convenient,” explains Vicki Watts, practice administrator. Kay and Paulus Orthodontics also have offices in Maumee and Perrysburg. Sylvania-based architect Nancy Kime designed the 4,000 square feet to maximize the space and natural light while meeting the needs of the practice. Drs. Kay and Paulus share a private office adjacent to the treatment room and two separate tooth brushing areas are conveniently placed nearby. In addition, a full laboratory and two consultation rooms are also included in the office layout. The long treatment room holds six treatment chairs and convenient workspaces, each equipped with computer monitors.
“We have a very high tech practice with the state-of-the art technologies including digital x-rays and intra oral scanners. We offer only the highest quality orthodontics for children and adults. In addition to traditional metal and clear braces, we offer Invisalign treatment.” Watts noted. Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible and comfortable to wear. The aligners are removable so patients can brush and floss normally to keep gums healthy. “We no longer need to take impressions of our patients but use a digital scanner, which is much easier for the patient and more accurate.”

According to the orthodontists, patients love their great smiles following treatment but there is also a great hygienic benefit of having straighter teeth. These include making it easier to brush and floss resulting in healthier gums. Also, properly aligned teeth will protect them from unwanted enamel wear.
Dr. Kay is a graduate of Cornell University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and economics. She earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Columbia University college of Dental Medicine, where she also obtained her certificate in orthodontics.
Dr. Paulus is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from OSU as well. He completed his orthodontic residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he received an MSD postgraduate specialty degree. His wife, Dr. Ashley Paulus is a pediatric dentist with Sylvania Pediatric Dental Care. Dr. Kay, Dr. Paulus and their team are passionate about giving their patients the best orthodontic treatment possible using the latest technology available.

Retainers
Hawley
Clear
Fixed retainers are just that. They are fixed or "glued" to the teeth. The are placed in a position which do not interfere with the bite and are behind the teeth so you cannot see them. Hygiene can be more difficult with fixed retainers because flossing becomes more challenging. So we try to reserve fixed retainers for cases that had severe crowding or large spaces. Even with fixed retainers in place, we recommend wearing the removable retainers provided.

Missing Teeth
Commonly missing teeth are upper laterals, lower second premolars, and third molars. Treatment timing is important. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children be seen around age 7, after the permanent first molars and incisors have erupted. If there are missing teeth, we can make certain decisions that will make treatment easier down the road. Some of the decisions are to:
1.) Wait on treatment with the idea of opening space to eventually replace them one day with implants or bridges. Before implants or bridges are placed, we need to make sure the patient's growth is complete. A great source of information about orthodontic treatment to prepare for implants is: http://www.kokichorthodontics.com/single-tooth-implants
2.) Close space. If we are closing space, we may decide to extract primary teeth sooner than they were supposed to exfoliate (fall out). The space may close on it's own or need orthodontics to close.

Invisalign for Adults & Teens

Choosing to straighten your teeth is a big decision that affects not only your appearance, but your lifestyle as well. As an adult, you may be looking to improve on your smile for business or social reasons. Or perhaps you're a teen or the parent of a teen hoping to make the best of an inevitable situation. Either way, Invisalign can provide a simple way to accomplish this.
Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you simply wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements Drs. Kay & Paulus plan out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You simply pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete and you achieve the confident smile that you've always wanted. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth.
